THE SECRET TO SUCCESS
Well here are a few secrets to academic success. Try them-- they really do work!1. Come to Class-- No matter how good your friend's note-taking skills may be, they are never a substitute for being there in-person yourself. And while you are there, participate actively. Ask questions, answer questions, offer opinions, and make funny faces when the professor says something outlandish. You will better retain ideas and concepts from classes in which you were an active participant.2. Read Actively-- Forget all the speed-reading nonsense you may have heard. Reading is not a race. Stop often to think about what you are reading. Make notes in the margins (it takes longer than merely underlining but it will force you to think harder and will save you time when you go back to review for exams). And remember that effective reading often means turning the pages in both directions as you revisit pages previously read.3. Give it Time-- 75% of what you get out of your college classes will depend on what you do outside of the classroom. The rule of thumb is that you should be working three hours outside class for every hour in class. Assuming a four course load, that adds up to a lot of hours. But it's less than many of you will spend working once you graduate, and it will still leave plenty of time for fun and relaxation.
